LA CHAINE SIMPSON (The Simpson Chain) :
Spoke owned a small shop where he sold the Simpson chain, the latest thing
in speed changing. Lautrec insures a good launch and shows, in the background,
the father Simpson on the left with Louis Bouglé at his side. |

TROUPE DE Mlle EGLANTINE (Miss Eglantine’s
Troop) : in 1897, Jane Avril went to try and make it in London
with three friends, Eglantine, Cléopatre and Gazelle. She asked Lautrec
to make a poster of the group, whose success in England was to be short-lived.
The painter invented a new style by drawing a lithograph showing the dancers
in a row, all in the same position, but all with their own very distinct
characteristics. |

IRISH AND AMERICAN BAR, RUE ROYALE –
THE CHAP BOOK : American review “The Chap Book” needed
a poster for publicity. Lautrec depicted an average night in Mr. Achille’s
bar, with Ralph, the American Indian-Chinese barman behind the bar. Ralph
came from San-Fransisco, and was known for his cocktails such as the “night
cup” and the “rainbow cup”. In front of the bar, the imposing
client is a regular customer that Lautrec loves painting: Mr. de Rothschild’s
driver. |

AU CONCERT (At The Concert) :
ordered by an American lithograph ink maker, The Ault and Wiborg Co., to
promote his products. The artist chose a scene showing Emilienne d’Alançon
in a box with Lautrec’s first cousin, Gabriel Tapié of Céleyran,
at her side. |

LA PASSAGERE DU 54 – PROMENADE EN
YACHT (The Passenger in Cabin 54 – A Yacht Trip) : Lautrec
loved the sea. When he visited his mother in Malromé, he would leave
from le Havre where a cargo and passenger ferry, usually the Chili coming
from Africa, took him to Bordeaux. When travelling with Maurice Guibert
in 1895, the woman staying in cabin 54 caught his eye. He refused to disembark
in Bordeaux, planning to travel all the way to Dakar where the beautiful
woman was to join her colonial civil servant husband. The artist’s
friend convinced him, with great difficulty, to get off in Lisbon. |
