CAUDIEUX : nicknamed “the canon man”, Caudieux was a comic singer and appeared at the “Petit Casino” (the Little Casino), “L’Eldorado” (the El Dorado) and the “Ambasadeurs” (Ambassadors). He was famous for his immense suppleness, which remained unhindered by his ample midriff. Lautrec created this poster when Caudieux was at the peak of his career, and in that same year reserved a space for him amongst the big names in his first lithograph album: the “Café-Concert” (café where singers entertain the customers).

1893
AU PIED DE L’ECHAFAUD (At the foot of the scaffold) : ordered by daily paper “Le Matin” (The Morning), this poster was designed to illustrate the new series-novel called “Au pied de l’échafaud, mémoires de l’abbé Faure” (At the foot of the scaffold: the memories of priest Faure), priest Faure being La Roquette prison’s chaplain.

1893
ARISTIDE BRUANT DANS SON CABARET (Aristide Bruant in his Cabaret) : for the first poster, Lautrec depicts Bruant in a three-quarter-length coat with his hat, scarf and cane, on stage. Here we only see his profile, but still with his accessories. Bruant displays his character on stage as he does around town.

1894
BRUANT AU MIRLITON (Bruant at the Mirliton cabaret) : this is Lautrec’s last poster on Bruant, and it could be perceived that the painter was aware of this. He depicts his friend, alone with his back turned, with neither cane nor scarf, but still wearing his hat.

1894
L’ARTISAN MODERNE (the modern artisan) : ordered by print editor Andrée Marty. The man in an overcoat walking towards the bedridden young woman is medal engraver, sculptor, decorator and art jeweller Henri Nocq.

1894
BABYLONE D’ALLEMAGNE (German Babylon) : after “Reine de Joie” (Queen of Joy) and “L’homme à femmes” (the Ladies Man), Victor Joze wrote “Babylone d’Allemagne”, a novel about Berlin morals. He asked Lautrec to make him a new poster. Unfortunately, the threat of a diplomatic incident with the German Embassy prevented the poster from being displayed. Lautrec made a lithograph of the poster to serve as a book cover.
